Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Disability Rights Advocates is pleased to make available on our website and in our offices the work of artists from the National Institute of Art & Disabilities (NIAD). NIAD provides an art program that promotes creativity, independence, dignity, and community integration for people with developmental and other disabilities.

Landmark Settlement of Class Action Lawsuits to Improve Disability Access to California State Parks

Overview Tucker v. California Department of Parks and Recreation

In 2005 DRA reached a landmark statewide class action settlement with the California State Park System. Under the settlement, over 250 state parks agreed to improve accessibility including: making trails accessible, providing access to beaches and shores, and providing captioned videos and sign language interpreters for park activities. As a result of this settlement, thousands of people with sensory and physical disabilities will have an equal opportunity to visit and enjoy California's state parks.

We are pleased to report that the California State Park System has spent approximately $80 million dollars to date on access improvements under the settlement. DRA continues to monitor the implementation phase of this case.
